Background:
The Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis (RePORT) International consortium was established to address the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic by fostering collaborative research and specimen sharing. As TB remains a leading cause of global mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, there is a critical need for large-scale, harmonized data to advance the development of new diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines. The third international meeting aimed to synthesize progress and outline future strategies for capacity building and translational research.
Abstract:
Methods: This report summarizes the proceedings of the third RePORT International annual meeting, which brought together investigators from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and South Africa. The meeting focused on the coordination of observational cohorts and the harmonization of clinical data and biobanking.
Results: The consortium reported significant progress in enrolling large cohorts of TB cases and household contacts, with thousands of participants providing longitudinal data and biological specimens. Key research themes discussed include transcriptomic signatures for TB risk, the impact of comorbidities like diabetes and HIV on treatment outcomes, and the development of new tools for predicting TB progression. The meeting also highlighted successful examples of local capacity building and South-South collaboration.
Conclusion: RePORT International has created a robust global infrastructure for TB research. By standardizing protocols and facilitating data sharing, the consortium is uniquely positioned to accelerate the discovery of biomarkers and the clinical validation of new TB control tools, ultimately contributing to the WHO End TB Strategy.
